Sugar Free Farm: Episode 2

Catch up on the happenings at Sugar Free Farm…

Before we get to Episode 2, I’ve got some good news, Episode 1 of Sugar Free Farm has returned to the ITV hub. And if you missed our show intro, it’s worth reading this post!

What happened in Episode 2:

We picked up on day 4 of our dietary experiment, watching Jennifer Ellison and Jane McDonald moving beyond the depths of their sugar detox symptoms. It’s so satisfying to see the difference, with Jane saying: “Yesterday was a really black day for me, I felt shocking, but I woke up this morning having a really good night’s sleep and I felt totally different.”

That’s not to say there weren’t still a few tensions – all that physical farm work saw some hungry challengers and there were various ‘moments’! Mark in particular struggled with a reduction in meat, making us all laugh with his comment, “I didn’t sign up for vegetarian farm”.

All jokes aside, we saw the humbling moment that Mark Labbett and I received the results of his MRI scan. This revealed a moderate fatty tissue in his liver, and an accumulation of visceral fat – the unwelcome sort that can form within your body’s cavities, wrapping itself around your vital organs, including the liver, pancreas and intestines. If left to progress, a fatty liver can lead to cirrhosis (a progressive disease which sees the liver’s healthy tissue replaced by scar tissue).

Once again, we’re reminded that our national sugar habit is no laughing matter

Naturally, for our organs to fulfil their functions and ward off disease, we need to keep this visceral fat at bay. And luckily for Mark, his case is reversible…if he can commit to making the necessary dietary changes which I am sure he will.

Once again, we’re reminded that our national sugar habit is no laughing matter.

On a lighter yet important note, Jennifer Ellison asked a great question regarding how the stars can maintain their Sugar Free Farm ways back in the real world. I get how difficult a prospect this can seem, especially as I’ve been there myself. But, as I told Jennifer, it all comes down to the preparation. Intrigued to learn more? I have a few tricks up my sleeve! Be sure to read ‘Want to join in at home?’ below!

Before I leave you to enjoy the show, I must clarify one point. I mentioned sugar’s effect on the development of diabetes. I was referring to Type 2 Diabetes – the preventable form, rather than Type 1, an autoimmune condition. Please have a read of ‘Avoiding Type 2 Diabetes‘ to better understand the difference.

Now, here’s the link for you to watch Episode 2 of Sugar Free Farm on the ITV hub. I really hope you’re enjoying the series so far and would love to respond to your comments below.

I’ll return soon with more Sugar Free Farm FAQs and the lowdown on Episode 3, which will be screened on Tuesday 9th February from 8pm on ITV.

Consult your doctor or health care practitioner for any health problems, and before embarking on any new health regimes, using any supplements or before making any changes in prescribed medications or food programmes.

Part of my work in clinic is to identity and address the root cause which is responsible for the symptoms a client is experiencing. The most common underlying condition I see is unbalanced hormones. Once I noticed that balancing hormones leads to the reduction of so many other symptoms, I knew I had to create a simple plan to help people understand and support their hormones.

Follow the plan

  1. What’s a,good alternative to bread? I love my bread? Thankyou

    • Great question. What to have instead of bread can be tricky! What I did in my bid to give up bread (I am Greek/Italian from South Africa – I ate a lot of bread) was to start having avocado, tomatoes and spinach with breakfast which then progressed to including peppers and cucumber too.

Do you think you could try having some avo instead of bread?
Or try these pancakes, you can use any gluten free flour https://angeliquepanagos.com/recipe-gluten-free-pancakes/

Lemon bar recipe details below but please remember, although refined-sugar free, this recipe contains dates which are dried fruits and can raise your blood sugar levels. All dried fruits are high in fructose so should be eaten in moderation. You guessed it, this recipe should feature in the 20% of 80/20!

Let me know how you are getting on!
