Unveiling the Farm House Rules, so you can Sugar Free Farm at home!
It’s been amazing to see how many of you want to pay Sugar Free Farm a visit (Laverstoke Park is just beautiful, isn’t it?!). While I’m excited this may be a possibility one day, there’s no reason you can’t get things started at home. Especially if you have the Farm House Rules our celebrity challengers had to abide by…
Let’s start with the obvious!
1. No sugar
2. No honey
3. No syrup
4. No sweets
5. No chocolate
6. No biscuits
7. No cakes
8. No cordial
And those that may surprise…
9. No fruit: remember, this rule applied to week one only; I explained why here. Come week two, you may introduce up to two portions of whole fruits each day.
10. No refined carbohydrates: for this, think anything white and fluffy! White bread, rice, cereals, pasta. Not only do these foods often contain added sugars (yes, even the savoury items!), the refining process strips away vital nutrients, including fibre. Put simply, refined carbohydrates rapidly convert to sugar in your body!
11. No processed food: as above, processed foods commonly contain a slew of sweeteners and sugars in place of valuable nutrients!
12. No low fat products: it may surprise to hear that no and low fat products frequently come loaded with sugar. It’s the manufacturer’s attempt to add more ‘flavour’!
13. No fizzy drinks: even the ‘sugar-free’ ones! Did you know artificial sweeteners are often even sweeter than sugar? A few sips will prime your tastebuds and increase those cravings.
14. No alcohol: AKA liquid sugar, need I say more?
15. No fruit juice: the juicing process removes the fibre, which means there’s nothing to slow the release of those sugars in your body.
So, what can you eat?!
REAL FOOD – NOTHING ELSE!
It may sound obvious now, but by eating natural foods in their whole form we’re going to get the best of those nutrients our bodies need. We’ll be fuelling ourselves with energising ingredients that’ll give us our bounce once we overcome any initial detox symptoms*.
How to do this:
1. Find a fortnight in your diary! I’d recommend picking a fairly free one, just in case you experience any detox symptoms* to start. As a rule of thumb, the more sugar in your diet, the more you can expect to experience these.
2. Have a read of my ‘6 steps to breaking the blood sugar cycle’ in this post. It will help you plan for your DIY Sugar Free Farm!
3. Choose a few recipes: preparation is the key to success. I’m sure you’ll love my Sugar-Free Cauliflower Pizza, Sweet Potato Granola and Gluten-Free Chicken Nuggets!
4. Struggling with sugar cravings throughout? Here’s five tricks to beat them!
*PLEASE NOTE: you should always consult your medical practitioner before proceeding with such a dietary change; especially if you have any medical conditions or concerns. I have joined.
I’m type 2 insulin dependant diabetic is this programme safe for me? I will of course consult my dr but just in case he doesn’t know about this. Would really appreciate a quick reply. Thank you
Hello Shirley, as you are on insulin any changes in diet will need to be monitored by your GP/ specialist. This way of eating will help regulate blood sugar levels and in turn insulin so please consult your GP to let him/her know the changes you are going to make.

Would love to have the recipe for the homemade baked beans and toast, if possible – i remember that it was sweet potato, tomatoes, basil and beans, but not the quantities or type of beans. We were all shocked at the sugar content of tinned beans!

I have been sugar free for about 8 years but find all the cookbooks replace the sugar with something else.
I don’t need the replacement as I now don’t have a sweet tooth but my diet is really bland.
Any help in expanding my diet would be great.
I don’t eat dairy or wheat either but do eat spelt.

My long term goal is to half my body weight to a healthy BMI however like the celebrities my sugar intake is frightening and I want to reset my taste buds as even sweet fruit isn’t sweet enough for me. I’m planning to do the 14 day sugar free programme but can I just confirm if fruit tea is permitted? Would a natural peanut butter such as the whole earth brand be a suitable snack with carrot sticks/cucumber crudites? Is seasoning foods during cooking with mixed herbs/garlic salt ok? I look forwards to your reply.

Hello Lucy, I am so pleased you would like to adopt a healthy lifestyle and reach your health goals. You need to see this as a lifestyle change, not a quick fix. Starting off with 14 days sugar free is a good way to start- have a look at all my blogs on this subject and please get in touch if you would like to see us for a tailored programme.
I assume you mean herbal teas, these are permitted. I would recommend mint, ginger & lemon, or a nice cinnamon and liquorice tea (Pukka do a great one) Or liquorice and peppermint tea from TeaPigs which can help with cravings

I loved your book which I bought couple of days ago. However, I was hoping for the recipe of bread that Jane McDonald was taking about. Disappointed not to find sugar free bread recipe in your book. Any chance of getting the recepie?
