Sugar Free Farm: Episode 1
The full lowdown on episode 1 of Sugar-Free Farm and how you can join in at home!
Thanks to all of you who’ve filled my inbox with kindness and questions since Episode 1 of Sugar-Free Farm hit ITV last week. As TV debuts go, it’s been incredibly exciting and I’m beaming from all your support. I’m going to try and answer as many of your questions as I can both here and in my fortnightly Health Tribe newsletter.
For those that missed it, here’s what you need to know…
The show: six famous faces are challenged to a dietary experiment – going cold turkey on sugar for two weeks, while living and working together at Laverstoke Park Farm. And when we say ‘cold turkey’, there wasn’t a single grain of sugar available during their stay!
My role: as the show’s nutritionist, I devised an exclusive menu of new sugar-free recipes for the farm. I was also on hand to advise and encourage our brave challengers throughout. Really, giving up sugar is tough…and I have first-hand experience! I was able to spend every day for a solid two weeks with the celebs talking about healthy eating to nourish the body, how to eat balanced meals and also how to change their behaviour towards eating the sweet stuff and sugary foods!
What happened in Episode 1:
Episode 1 introduced us to our Sugar Free Farm residents – Jane McDonald, Rory McGrath, Mark Labbett, Tupele Dorgu, James ‘Arg’ Argent and Jennifer Ellison – and the stories behind just how much sugar our stars were eating – a whopping 800lb a year combined!
After bearing witness to this monstrous pile, the challenge began. There was a bit of drama along the way and I wasn’t at all surprised to see tempers start to fray and the first of our sugar detox symptoms appear. Jennifer and Jane were hit the hardest, with Jennifer requiring some medical support.
It was my role to step in and remind the challengers of their goal. You’ll have to tune into ITV for the rest of the series on Tuesday the 2nd and Tuesday the 9th at 8pm to see if and how they pushed through!
Some questions raised from this episode…
Yes, whole fruit is incredibly healthy and should make up 2 of your 5 a day. As we discussed in the ‘6 sugar myths debunked’, we look to fruit for vital nutrients and fibre. However, my job was to reset the stars’ tastebuds and this meant removing everything sweet from their diet for the first week. Week two saw us reintroducing some fruit, but you will have to watch the rest of the series to see that unfold.
I can assure you they weren’t! While we were on the farm for two whole weeks, we’ve only got three hour-long episodes to share the journey. Sadly you won’t get to see everything that was said and eaten, but you will get to see plenty more. Keep watching, and ask if there’s something you want to know more about!
I get it, it doesn’t look too pretty, but it’s amazing to watch how our tastebuds grow to love those notes we find bitter or unsettling to begin with. And that’s why the smoothie is there, not only to fuel our challengers with some hydrating and vitamin-filled goodness, but also to see how they become accustomed to it. I promise, it tastes great!
Want to join in at home?
1. Watch out for my next blog post! I’m going to be unveiling the ‘farm rules’ for you to follow.
2. Try the recipes: you asked and we answered, my Sugar-Free Sweet Potato Granola and Sugar-Free Cauliflower Pizza are now live on the recipes pages!
3. Stay in the loop: I’m excited to be working on a recipe book (thanks to all who’ve asked about this!), alongside my soon-to-be-launched 7 Day Sugar Detox. Want to be the first to know more? Join my free Health Tribe mailing!
4. Leave a sugar-free question! Ask away in the comments, I’m here to help.
Finally, don’t forget to watch Episode 2 of Sugar Free Farm at 8pm on Tuesday 2nd February over on ITV! Or if you missed catch it on ITV Player on demand…
While it’s entertaining stuff, there’s a real message behind this show. The experiment is underpinned by evidenced-based science, with our national sugar consumption having reached epic proportions and increasing our risk of a host of preventable diseases. See my three part special Finding blood sugar balance, Avoiding insulin resistance and Avoiding Type 2 diabetes for more on the science.
Nourishing well wishes,
Angelique

Hi I have cut down my sugar intake a lot. Instead of having 2 sugars in my tea, I now have one flat teaspoon. Ribera is very diluted. I must admit I don’t eat much fruit. In the supermarket I saw a product called half spoon. Is it any good?
Hello Pauline,
I am so pleased you have already reduced your sugar intake per tea by half. That is great progress!
What fruit do you eat?
Half spoon is a mix of sugar and artificial sweeteners, which are around 200 times sweeter than sugar. My advice is to stay away from anything with artificial sweeteners and wean yourself off that last teaspoon of sugar. You can do it!
Hope this helps?
It tried to cut down my sugar intake in tea by putting less on the spoon but it was not effective so in the end I went cold turkey and just cut it out. It took a year to get used to it but I’m glad I did.
Hi can you tell me the recipe for the lemon bake in the last episode please?
Hi I would love to mhave the recipe for the lemon slice with dates on episode 3 Great show thanking you Deirdre.
Would love the recipe for the lemon bars they had at the party!? And do you have a tip for sugar free ketchup?
Thanks
Hi Angelique – we have just watched the final episode and towards the end there was the lemon tart/bar prepared for the farm workers. Do you have the recipie available?
Many thanks, Nick
Hi, watched the programme with interest as I have virtually cut out sugar after working with personal trainer and talking about nutrition. I found it quite easy and now find I can easily resist sweets, cakes, biscuits etc but it is the hidden extra sugar in things like mayonnaise. I now read ingredient lists on packets and anything with added sugar, glucose, dextrose etc goes back on the shelf. Would love the recipe from today’s programme for the lemon slice.
Hi Ronnie,
Thanks for your message! Great work on cutting out sugar. I agree with you, that hidden sugar that is added to foods causes a major problem especially when you don’t expect to have sugar in the item, like mayonnaise. Reading the ingredients list is key, it really sounds like you have got this!

Let me know what you think!
I have been making flapjacks and biscuits from Davina’s sugar free book. This is replaced with maple syrup and honey. Is this good or still too much sugar??
Hello Lynn,
Great questions!
I love Davina, and I have that book too.
Ok….
Remember that sugar is sugar, either in its refined or raw form, and the body doesn’t differentiate between a natural sugar or an added/ processed sugar. Even naturally high sugar foods should be eaten in moderation.
So maple syrup and honey; is definitely part of the 20% in my 80/20 ethos. In other words, still only eat these foods in moderation rather than every day.
Hope that helps!
I have been trying the low or no added sugar way of life for a few months. I thought I was fairly aware of what I was putting in my mouth until the last 6 months. Well done making the show and you Angelique for the wonderful work and recipes! So far I feel better, lost weight and am not a slave to the sugar industry. As diabetes runs in my family I have a vested interest not to end up diabetic

good morning
would it be possible to have the receipe for the lemon bars showed in the final show of Sugar Free Farm, I am diabetic with a sweet tooth and these bars looked perfect
Hi Sarah,
Lemon bar recipe is up on the site
https://angeliquepanagos.com/sugar-free-lemon-bars/
Remember, although refined-sugar free, this recipe contains dates which are dried fruits and can still spike your insulin. All dried fruits are high in fructose so should be eaten in moderation. You guessed it, this recipe should feature in the 20% of 80/20!
So keep an eye on your sugar levels please and have in moderation.
Hope you enjoy, do let me know what you think please and share a photo if you can.
Am very keen to try going sugar free and wondered when you’re 7 day sugar detox book will be released?
Hi
Where I can find the recipe for all the meals made on the Sugar Free Farm. They all looked delicious, especially the lemon slices made on last night’s episode? I’m all for eating as healthy as possible.
Many thanks
That is great to hear!

Loved the programme and would like to know when a book is being published. PamPam Thompson
Enjoyed the show very much and gave me encouragement to cut out sweets, chocolate, cakes & biscuits (I was a chocoholic, had to have it everyday). Have survived 9 days so far without crashing probably because I don’t drink tea or coffee (I only drink water or camomile/green tea).
I thought it was a shame you used celebrities in the show(although I liked all that appeared) as most celebs could probably afford to pay for personal nutritional advice.
It might have been nice if you had used type 2 diabetics (not all diabetics are overweight). It would have been interesting to see if it helped their condition.
Hello
Thank you for your feedback, I am so pleased you enjoyed the show and that you have been inspired!
How are you getting on with your new sugar-free lifestyle?
Hi I,ve really enjoyed the programme , found the facts to be really shocking the food that you recommended for them looked really good . My question for you is are you going to have a recipe book to accompany the programme , if not where can I find all your reciepes.
Thank you, that is great to hear!

Hi I am wanting the lemon date bar receipe that was on the ep 3 last night
Thank you julie
I gave up sugar just over a year ago and so far have lost 4st. I’m now the same weight that I was 20 years ago and can fit into clothes I never thought I’d be able to. I didn’t go beserk with exercise and have never felt hungry. I eat pretty much anything, but fastidiously avoid sugar/honey/artificial sweetners including fructose.
I wanted to watch the programme to ‘sense check’ if I’m doing the right thing, and if there’s anything I could do better. I have grapefruit before my porridge at breakfast (yummy with ground and toasted almonds, cinnamon and coconut milk) but am thinking about getting a Nutri Ninja. Do you think that would be a good move? Only other fruit I eat is strawberries/raspberries/blueberries and dried apple slices (dried using lemon juice; no sugar). Do I get a gold star? 😀
Hello Patrina,
Wow! That is fantastic weight loss, and it sounds like you did it very sensibly. Well done, I am so pleased you are experiencing the benefits not only to your health, but from what you have said to your wardrobe as well.
Cutting out sugar and artificial sweeteners plus your weight loss earns you that gold star!
Your fruit choices sound good, are you drying the apple yourself? I would only have dried fruit on occasion, you are better off eating the fresh apple.
Are you thinking of using the Nutri Ninja for vegetable smoothies or green soups? If so then yes, I would say it is a good move.
Hi, I have really enjoyed the programme so much so that my hubby and I have set ourselves an eight-week sugar free challenge – so far so good (only day 4…), Hubby is struggling with what to have as a dessert which he ‘must’ have – where can I find the recipe for the date/walnut based lemon dessert on last night’s final programme?
Hi Tracy,
Fantastic! Glad you enjoyed the show and that it has inspired you both to have an 8 week sugar-free challenge. How is it going?
Here is the lemon bar recipe, it contains dates so can only be part of your 20% in my 80/20 recommended guidelines
https://angeliquepanagos.com/sugar-free-lemon-bars/
Maybe your hubby could try some apple with almond butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon as a dessert?
Please let me know how you are getting on.
I have stopped tea with caffeine and have switched too decaffeinated tea with no milk or sugar. Ingredients are 100% black tea – twinnings Everday Decaffeinated. many thanks Jen
Hi Jennifer,
Great question and well done on stopping the sugar in the tea!
I don’t recommend decaffeinated tea (or coffee) because it has been chemically altered.
Most decaf tea is decaffeinated using a chemical solvent or carbon dioxide to strip the leaves, similar to how coffee is decaffeinated.
I would recommend enjoying naturally decaf herbal teas like peppermint, ginger, chamomile, rooibos/ red bush tea etc.
Hope this helps!
where can I find the recipes used on the program

Where can I get the recipes from of the meals on sugar free farm. I follow a low carb diet. I’ve lost 7 stone and some of those meals look tasty!!
Thank you!
Well done on your weight loss, over what time frame?
Do you still eat healthy complex carbs like brown rice and quinoa for example?

Hi Angelique, loved the series. I try to make most of my meals from scratch, and I have very much cut down on my sugar intake. I would be interested in the recipe for the lemon cake that was on the final episode. I have really sweet tooth, so always looking for tasty alternatives to a bar of chocolate! Thanks for the inspiration x

Hi what is the recipe for the lemon slice that was make for the end party?
I’m trying to find the recipe for the lemon slices from episode 3 of the sugar free farm. Is it on the website?
Hi what was the rule on dairy please? Was it completely banned on the show? I’m aware yoghurt contains a fair mount of sugar!
Hi Chris,
All and any low fat or fat free diary was banned. Full fat natural diary was part of their plan as they worked with the produce on the farm.
Thank you for the programe, I have often thought how bad it is to have so much “hidden” sugar in our food. I did write to a company about the strong sugar in their food and I was pleased they did answer.
hi I loved the sugar free farm is there plans for any more and are you going to bring a book out with sugar free recipes ,I’m diabetic and been struggling to give up sugar this program has given me the boost I need I’m on day 2 of no sugar except fruit ,already feeling better even hubby is amazed of how much sugar is in tin food etc .
we call your juice drink green sludge but I love it now and have one each morning with porridge for breakfast
Hi Mary,
I am so pleased that you loved the SFF!
Green sludge sounds great 🙂 I am glad that you like the taste now, you will be amazed at how different food will start to taste.
As you are diabetic, removing sugar from the diet would be really beneficial but please keep your consultant informed of your dietary changes so that any medication can be monitored and controlled.

Hi Angelique
I watched the series with great interest and would like to have a sugar free recipe cook book or a list of meals I could make including chicken pie and what liquid would I use inside.
Many thanks
My husband and I wish to go sugar free for a week. On the show, did this include no natural sugars in food? If so, do you have a list of foods we can eat that are sugar free please?
Hi Laura,
I am so pleased that you enjoyed the show and you have both been inspired to go sugar-free.
Great question!
There’s nothing wrong with intrinsic sugars, that is naturally occurring sugars in fruit and vegetables. The problem is the extrinsic sugar, like that which is added to processed foods. It’s the sheer amount of the latter in our modern diets that’s a health threat.
Many of us are addictive to the intense sweetness of added sugar because it triggers the reward centre of the brain where the neurotransmitter dopamine works to make us feel comfort and pleasure from food.
Eating a wholefood diet that is unprocessed is the key to good health. So yes naturally occurring sugars, which is the natural by-product glucose from digestion of unrefined carbohydrates & is what the body needs and uses as fuel along with energy from fat metabolism, was on the menu.
Hope this helps?
In episode 3 they made lemon bars for the party. Is it possible to have the recipe please
Would love to know the recipe for the smoothie? Just starting my sugar free diet and struggling with what is and isn’t sugar free. Surprising how much I relied on potatoes.

Thanks
I have enjoyed watching sugar free farm. Do you do this for everyday people as I would love to cut down on my sugar intake
Hi Mark,
Great, I am really pleased you enjoyed SFF.
We haven’t set up a sugar free farm for the public yet but I see people in my nutrition clinic, if you would like to see me for a consultation to work out a personalised programme please email.
Hello,
The program was certainly an eye opener. I don’t have much sugar in my diet anyway, apart from fruit, I was very interested in the recipes which were used on the program, especially when they had the final day party it was a block cake made with dates, I would love the recipe if at all possible.
Kind regards
Mary

Hello Angelique, I personally follow a ketogenic lifestyle and have done for almost a year so this is not new to me , it’s great that the general diet world have woken up to the sugar and hidden sugars (carbohydrates) in our dietstatic and how sugar not fat is the enemy , I haven’t watched the show yet but will do . The lemon bars look great although I couldn’t use the dates
Thanks Kerry, you could try them without or possibly try apricots if that fits in with your keto plan?
