5 steps to beating the bloat

Rich festive foods, party booze and all that travel can see us feeling horribly bloated! Time to bring back the calm with my five top tummy-settling tricks…

A cup with tea and lemons

Fire up those digestive juices with a lovely mug of hot (or cold) lemon water. I worry about your teeth, so please sip through a straw.

Remember what your grandmother said about chewing your food? It’s true! Speed gobbling leads to excess gas and undigested foods, which both bloat your belly. Your stomach doesn’t have teeth, so chew well and pause between bites.

Refined foods all too often come with bloat-inducing salts and sugars, while lacking the fibre and minerals your digestion craves. Switch to whole foods and complex carbohydrates, gradually building up to your 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day ( 2 pieces of fruit, 8 portions of veg).

Peppermint tea offers a cooling, calming remedy for stressed stomachs and minds (and you know stressed minds also lead to stressed stomachs)! One to three cups a day, while reducing your caffeine-load. Win-win.

Daily movement supports your daily movements! Start with a brisk 10 minute walk and work towards at least 30 minutes of activity a day. Gentle exercises such as yoga also work wonders when your belly’s in full bloat.

Part of my work in clinic is to identity and address the root cause which is responsible for the symptoms a client is experiencing. The most common underlying condition I see is unbalanced hormones.   1. Please can you post the recipe for the lemon bars that contained dates. Loved the series, have put links on my foodie page on FB. I hope that supermarkets will listen and mark very clearly how much sugar is in everything!

      Remember, although refined-sugar free, this recipe contains dates which are dried fruits. All dried fruits are high in fructose so should be eaten in moderation. You guessed it, this recipe should feature in the 20% of 80/20!
