Nutritional Therapy

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”

― Hippocrates

Nutritional therapy is based on the scientific principle that food, as nature intended it, provides the nutrients needed to heal the body and to help bring us back to a state of optimum health and vitality. This is achieved through the consequence of metabolic homeostasis (where the individual maintains equilibrium in the throughput of energy to sustain body function, structure and information).

Nutritional Therapists use a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to an individual’s symptoms and health concerns. This approach allows Nutritional Therapists to work with individuals to address nutritional balance and help support the body towards maintaining health, i.e. A Nutritional Therapist treats the person as a whole, and not the condition itself.

Although many health complaints require particular medication, it has been repeatedly shown that nutrition and lifestyle approaches to healthcare supports the health of all the major systems of the body (digestive, endocrine, reproductive, excretory, skeletal, immune, muscular, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular and integumentary, AKA skin, hair and nails).

Ongoing studies have shown nutritional therapy can benefit all age groups. Typical priorities in nutritional therapy consultations include support to achieve optimum energy levels, healthy blood-sugar balance, emotional and psychological wellbeing, optimum gastrointestinal health, alleviating hormonal imbalances and intolerance to a broad range of food groups.

Nutritional Therapy is not a one-pill wonder; it is a change in lifestyle to help bring the body back to optimum health

People have many and varied requirements of a nutritional therapy appointment, and people often seek specialist support for their current health status. There are many conditions recognised as requiring unique nutritional recommendations to rebalance the body.  Nutritional Therapy is generally considered to have a positive impact on the following:

  • Preconception care and fertility
  • Pregnancy
  • Skin conditions
  • Performance nutrition
  • PMS
  • Menopause
  • Female health
  • Male health
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Eating disorders

All the pressures of modern life, such as working long hours, deadlines, eating on the run and the speed at which we live, can cause the quality of food to become less important. This unfortunately puts a strain on the body and in the long run may give rise to ailments. Most supermarkets are stocked with ready meals and snacks, which are more often than not low in nutritional value. In turn, even though we are eating, we are not giving the body the building blocks needed to maintain health and vitality. Nutritional therapy uses food and supplements to give the body the nutrients it needs to thrive, while investigating the foods that may be causing adverse effects.

Following a nutritional therapy programme does not mean you have to cut out all the foods you enjoy! It’s about making simple, practical changes that become a way of life; to put you back in control and give you a natural balanced focus.

With nutritional therapy you will work with your therapist to design a realistic programme that will help you reach your health goals. The approach is personal and tailored to your specific needs and adjusts to your environment.

What you can expect

A nutritional therapist assesses a person’s nutritional needs to achieve normal physiological function. This means the maintenance of homeostasis, a position of wellbeing we all seek, but many fail to achieve.

Nutritional therapy is not a one pill wonder: it is a change in lifestyle to bring your body back to optimum health. Although you may see some immediate improvements it can take the body time to come back into balance.

Part of my work in clinic is to identity and address the root cause which is responsible for the symptoms a client is experiencing. The most common underlying condition I see is unbalanced hormones. Once I noticed that balancing hormones leads to the reduction of so many other symptoms, I knew I had to create a simple plan to help people understand and support their hormones.
